Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a cream, an oil or a balm? Rest assured, you are not the only one.
From a general look, they all seem to do the same thing, including moisturizing and nourishing the skin. However, they still offer different benefits and, in turn, a different experience.
Which is better for the skin? Today, at Les Sens de Marrakech, we are going to explain the main differences between cream, balm and oil and share some recommendations on our products.
Creams, classic and essential hydration
Creams are usually a combination of oil and water-based ingredients and are designed to moisturize and protect the skin.
Did you know ? The main difference between creams and balms and oils is actually the amount of water contained in their formula.
What are the creams for after all? It is important to know that we use creams to moisturize, i.e. to bring water to the skin to avoid its dehydration (milks and creams contain water) as well as to nourish it (thanks to to their compositions of oils and emollients). Two different functions essential to the balance of the skin. This helps to get the most out of it, while protecting the skin from external aggressions.
But in any case, what is important is that all skin types need a moisturizer: from dry to combination skin, to oily and acne-prone.
It is then necessary to choose one according to the needs of the skin.
There are different types of creams available to take care of your skin, depending on your skin’s needs. You can use a moisturizer for acne-prone skin, an anti-aging cream for oily skin, a cream for sensitive and dehydrated skin, or a cream for oily and combination skin. (Here are the day creams available on our website.)
You can apply these creams to damp or dry skin and combine them with a few drops of your favorite oil to your cream before applying.
Remember that the skin around the eyes and lips is more delicate and it is important to find a cream specially designed for this area. (Like our eye cream gel cream)
The rest of the body also needs hydration. This is why it is recommended to use a moisturizing body cream, such as Oriental Milk for daily use. As well as Oriental Delight cream for very dry skin, which contains anti-inflammatory ingredients and nourishing essential oils. And good news, you find it in a 75 ml tube to take it everywhere.
Balms, care and repair
The main difference between balms and creams is that balms are almost 100% oil in composition. They are actually solidified oils that soften and glide on the skin when they come into contact with it. And unlike creams, balms do not contain water.
Balms are especially beneficial for people with dry skin or living in cold, dry climates. Balms are most effective when applied to dry skin, as this allows for better absorption of the ingredients. They also offer a nourishing layer of protection to the skin, which makes them an ideal choice to protect the skin against external aggressions, such as household products. By using a balm, you apply beneficial ingredients in a concentrated, topical manner. Balms also have a magic power to give the skin an immediate glow and shine. In the sun, they allow the skin to be luminous from the first rays of the sun.
An example of a very nourishing balm is sensual balm with argan oil, which can be used for skin and hair. You will find it in a pretty hand-accessorized jar format to put in your bathroom but also in a 75 ml tube for a trip or a discovery.
There are also other types of specialized lip balms to prevent chapping, especially in cold weather. (see the section on lip balms)
Oil, the ally not to forget
Oils are generally composed of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants with important benefits for the skin. They mimic the natural production of sebum in the skin, helping to balance everyone’s own oil production.
At Les Sens de Marrakech, we select both single-origin oils and products that combine a variety of oils. You can mix your oil with your favorite cream. This tip is valid for both face and body care products, but the oil must be incorporated in very small quantities and when applying your cream.
This is for example our argan oil which contains only argan to balance and nourish the skin while moisturizing it. Or prickly pear seed oil which is particularly suitable for mature skin. Both are soothing and deeply repair the skin thanks to their combination of organic ingredients. (Find these oils in the section Oils and Serum) In addition, be aware that all Les Sens de Marrakech oils are of natural origin.
So, the key here is to keep your skin hydrated and most importantly to find the best possible combination to do so. Cream, balm or oil? You now have all the information you need to make the right decision. And at any time, the Les Sens de Marrakech team remains available to help you choose the ideal product.
And if you want one last piece of advice. It is important to use these 3 forms of care because it is essential that the skin nourishes itself differently. To do this, adopt the type of care according to the seasons. For the face, an oil serum before your cream. For the body, in summer, balms and oils and in winter, milks and creams.
